ABOUT ISBN REGISTRATION

Importance

All book publishing companies are required to show the ISBN number on every book they release.

Trustworthiness

An ISBN number assigned to a book serves as a guarantee that the book is authentic and has not been plagiarized, pirated, deemed offensive, or falsely represented. This identifier ensures the book's credibility and originality, offering assurance to potential readers or buyers.

One-time Process

The registration of an ISBN is a singular event; once obtained, publishers are not required to renew it.

Global recognition

When using an ISBN number to search on an ISBN portal, one can access comprehensive information about a book, including its title, author details, and other relevant information.

Access to bibliographic databases

These databases, established by ISBN, serve to provide timely updates to customers through libraries and book trade organizations.

Uniform Format for publishing

ISBN allows a publisher to designate a specific edition of a book and a standardized format for publishing that edition. It provides a means for uniquely identifying different versions of the same book and ensures consistency in how they are published.

WHAT IS AN ISBN?

The ISBN, short for International Standard Book Number, serves as a distinctive 13-digit numeric identifier utilized for commercial books. Initially, ISBNs comprised 10 digits until December 2006, after which they expanded to 13 digits starting January 1, 2007. Allocation of an ISBN involves a calculation using a confidential mathematical formula, and each ISBN includes a 'check-digit' to ensure its accuracy and validity.

STRUCTURE OF AN ISBN NUMBER

What is a Private Limited Company?

An ISBN consists of five essential components, each separated by spaces (below the barcode) or hyphens (above the barcode). These components are:

1. Prefix: The ISBN starts with either 978 or 979, serving as its prefix.

2. Registration Group: This segment identifies the country, state, or region within the international ISBN system, represented by 1 to 5 digits.

3. Registrant: This element identifies the publisher and can vary in length up to 7 digits.

4. Publication: This part specifies the particular edition and format of a title, ranging up to 6 digits.

5. Check Digit: The final digit of the ISBN, calculated using a "Mod 10" system with alternating weights of 1 and 3, ensures the numerical integrity of the ISBN.

These components collectively make up the ISBN code, essential for uniquely identifying books and other published materials worldwide.
