A barcode is a machine-readable representation of data, typically used for identifying products or items. It consists of a series of parallel lines or geometric patterns printed on labels or directly on products. Barcodes are scanned by optical scanners, which interpret the pattern of lines and convert it into a readable format, such as a product code or serial number.

There are different types of barcodes, each designed for specific purposes. Two commonly used types are EAN-13 and UPC-A:

1. EAN-13 (European Article Number):

• EAN-13 is a barcode standard used worldwide for marking products sold at retail points of sale.

• It consists of 13 digits encoded in the barcode, with the first few digits identifying the country where the product was registered.

• The digits following the country code represent specific details about the product, such as the manufacturer and the item number.

• EAN-13 barcodes are widely used in Europe and many other countries around the world.

2. UPC-A (Universal Product Code):

• UPC-A is a barcode symbology used predominantly in the United States and Canada for tracking trade items in stores.

• It consists of 12 numeric digits encoded in the barcode, with the first digit representing the type of product.

• The following digits are a company prefix and product number.

• UPC-A barcodes are found on almost every retail product in those regions, typically printed on labels affixed to the product packaging.
